Differing consumer base
While both companies are via for the same market of smart phones, they go about their business in complete different ways. Apple relies on their proven ability to use propaganda to create a frenzied launch on an annual basis. Furthermore Apple fans wait a full two years for a completely redesigned handset, while producing upgraded versions of last year's models on odd years.
Google through its Android OS is about putting the latest technology to the forefront on a monthly or even bi-monthly basis. Consumers no matter what time they upgrade, are treated with a bevy of new phones and feature that were not available in previous models.
Business decision rubbing the consumer base the wrong way
While Apple has built an extremely solid base of fans with having a very polished feel to their OS, others (such as me) have had negative experience with previous models that just turns me off to the thought of purchasing a iPhone. I remember late 2007 I purchased my first iPhone. At the time it was an outstanding piece of technology, and the phone itself was incredible to use. That never changed, but my thoughts on Apple did one day.
Like many I had a jailbroken version and with a little research I found that though the feature was not unlocked on the phone, the original iPhone did have video recording capabilities. And are not officially supported from Apple through the iVideoCamera App. The first official iPhone to release with a native video camera was the iPhone 3GS. Reason why it wasn't unlocked? The reason is simple; it gave the normal user a reason to upgrade to a 3GS allowing Apple to rake in more profit for a "new feature".
Shady moves along with the ongoing dubbed "patent wars" have left me with a taste that Apple is trying in any way possible to hang onto their once superior status.
Price
Not much to say here, iPhone 4S launch price was as follows: 16GB $199, 32GB $299, 64GB $399 - with a 2 year phone contract. Even the most expensive Android cost $250 for 32GB Samsung Galaxy SIII on 2 year contract nearly 9 months since the 4S release.
Assets
Google has the assets to combat anything and everything that Apple has to throw at them. Granted Apple is one ranked as the most profitable tech company in recent reports, but the type of money that it would take to go to war against Google, would most likely change the way Apple does business forever.
Conclusion
These are just a few reasons why Apple has no chance to stop the growth that Android has gained in recent years. Google is going to stand by its mobile OS, and if recent events are any indication plan to make sure Apple has some repercussion to their actions.
